I'm sure I can find ways to minimize the damage, like by yanking the previous torrent for a week before, or unrestricting the connection during that week to let people get their files downloaded before I yank the torrent from the private tracker. While I hadn't really considered the fairness of yanking a torrent, I suspect it'll have to be a necessary evil.

I know it's not optimal, but the site has been live for 33 hours, and served up over 50GB of the full 79GB. As I add new & old concerts or make corrections, managing each torrent by year would be arduous and prone to errors - and really, just exacerbate the problem you're describing. The whole 're-seeding' thing is going to happen regularly. People in the middle of something will have to start again because the content of the .torrent won't match what's on their hard drive(s) and if that happens, *poof*. torrent information that the dowloaders have to read changes (total byte size, content listing, etc), and you get errors if that happens. because when you change the content of the file, the encoded. torrent to get current, and start reseeding and that's going to mess up anyone who is in the middle of downloading/seeding.

and tell me if I am mistaken here, but I believe, whenever you update it, we're going to have to download the new. I opened it up, and it was too much to want to sort through all at once to try and find something I want. If you at least parsed it out by year, or tour that might make it a little less cumbersome and "scary" for people to participate. everything in one file will in the long run make it harder to keep seeded. I love the idea of having everything in one place, but, why not parse it out a little more. I'm also equally appreciative of any constructive criticism of my project. I do appreciate the kudos from folks in the forum. However, once I'd realized the work involved just collecting the existing concert recordings, it quickly became a bit of a joke - I wasn't going to be able to create a system that did even half of what I was thinking - at least not within this decade. I had the idea of creating a website with a database of each and every song - allowing people to search in the way that made the most sense to them. For example, de-selecting the 2010 folder at the top level eliminates 30GB of data (almost 50% of the archive) with one click. The rationale for the folder structure was this: I wanted people to be able to find a particular concert quickly, and to be able to de-select the concerts they weren't interested in with a minimum of clicks. In the cases where I had to convert SHN or FLAC files to mp3, I used 192k/VBR (via LAME if that matters) because I find that at bitrates over 160k, I have substantial difficulty discerning the difference between the MP3 and the FLAC. The MP3 bitrate is whatever was provided / available, but usually around the 160-192k range. If I've done something you're unhappy about, let me know and we'll come to some agreement on what is acceptable to you, the creator, and me, the anal-retentive archivist. Most of the corrections surrounded removing prefixed track numbers (that belongs in a separate field), adding missing fields (like the date & location of the concert, or track numbers) or removing crazy character combinations like "\&".

Not sure if you're being sarcastic or not about the ID3 tags - I haven't actually changed that many of them since I've only recently discovered an editor that I like. You can also find me on Twitter at JMFanDotCom. Most modern BitTorrent clients allow you to select ONLY the folders you're interested in.

The more people who download content (even if it's just a couple shows) the more stable and persistent the archive will become. Long story short, I've spent the better part of 8 months collecting each and every piece of concert footage I could find, sorting it, documenting it tweaking ID3 tags, and making it available through the best distribution method I could find: BitTorrent. I spent a few weeks becoming increasingly frustrated with finding the music I wanted on a website that didn't want money or force me to sit around looking at ads. I realize it's kinda bad form to post what is essentially shameless self-promotion as your first post, but here goes.īack in February 2010, I wanted to see if I could find a recording of John Mayer's show in Toronto - and my eyes were opened to the taper culture.
